Macy's First Snow

We really haven't had much snow in Indianapolis so far this year. So, it wasn't until we went to Goshen for Christmas that Macy got to wake up to a beautiful snowfall. She seemed to enjoy it!

Our house decorated for Christmas

Merry Christmas, Baby!

We just returned from a week of Christmas fun! First, we spent several days in Lexington with Bryce's family, then we headed to Goshen to spend some time with mine. I had a lot of fun this year buying little presents for Macy and dreaming up traditions I'd like to start with her when she's older.

Macy was so much fun over the holidays and was very pleasant despite 12 hours in the car. She is becoming more alert and aware of her surroundings all the time. She has become interested in things around her that are not toys and wants to grab them! I have to keep an eye on her all of the time now.

Getting into presents--she is sitting up by herself quite well now!

5 months!

Yesterday Macy turned 5 months old. We now know what the books and websites mean when they say this is the "honeymoon stage" of infancy. She has become so fun and interactive! Bryce and I find ourselves doing such silly things to make Macy smile and laugh. We don't have a doctor's appointment this month, so I'm not certain on the stats...

Weight: Roughly 14 1/2 lbs (according to bathroom scale)

Clothing size: Still wearing mostly 3 month clothes, but starting to transition to 3-6 month clothes. She is especially becoming too long for the footed pajamas

Diet: Macy is still exclusively drinking breastmilk. After reading more about introducing solid foods, I am going to try to go a full 6 months feeding her breastmilk only, then begin to introduce solids. Things are going very well and she's consistently growing in the 75th percentile.

Sleep: Not much has changed here in the past month. Macy sleeps from 7:30pm-8am, usually waking up twice to nurse. During the day she takes naps after being awake for 2 hours. That usually amounts to one nap in the morning, one in the afternoon, and one early evening. The naps have slowly increased from 30 minutes to about 45 (with a few 2-hour naps sprinkled in!)

Development: Macy recently started sitting up briefly on her own. She grabs things easily now and everything that goes in her hands goes straight to her mouth. She is rolling from tummy to back, but doesn't travel far (yet). Macy loves her exersaucer and doorway jumper. She really enjoys standing and exploring toys with her hands. She has also started more of a belly laugh this month. Bryce plays peekaboo with her, which apparently is hilarious! No teeth yet, but she loves to chew. Macy has discovered her feet and loves to grab her toes while I change her diaper.

We have enjoyed Macy so much and are excited for changes to come. Having a baby this holiday season has added an extra element of fun for me. I look forward to starting traditions with her like baking, singing Christmas carols, shopping, visiting Santa, and watching Christmas movies. Happy holidays to everyone!

First Visit with Santa

Today I took Macy to visit Santa. The line was very short and Macy behaved so well! I couldn't get her to smile (Bryce wasn't there to make high-pitched noises or dance around), but at least she didn't cry...

She's bound to get something good in her stocking this year!

California Girls

Macy, Bryce, and I were lucky enough to spend the week in southern California last week. Bryce's company (Stego Industries) is based in Orange County, so we make the trip annually. Bryce had work meetings throughout the week, so Macy and I spent time with Bryce's co-workers' wives. We shopped a lot, but also spent time relaxing, sitting on patios to eat, drink, and enjoy the 70-degree weather, and visiting the ocean.

This was Macy's first flight and she did wonderfully! She slept a lot in my arms, but when she was awake, she was pleasant most of the time. When we got off of the plane and exited the airport in Orange County, Macy got her first glimpse of a palm tree and smiled. Maybe she's a warm-weather girl like her mom!

On Friday we wrapped up the week with a brunch for the women and the Stego Christmas party. The company and food were all wonderful, as usual. It was a great way to get us into the Christmas spirit. Something about palm trees wrapped in white lights warms my heart...

So Thankful

We had such a great time with family over Thanksgiving. We were able to travel to Lexington and Goshen and had lots of good food. These holidays are a bit more hectic with new babies on both sides of the family, but it is so much fun! We are obviously thankful for even more this year. Macy has added so much to our lives and we are fortunate to have her!

4 Months Old

Yesterday our sweet little girl turned 4 months old! Her appointment went well this month. Here are her stats:

Length: 25 inches (90th percentile)
Weight: 14 lbs 3 oz (75th percentile)
Head: 16.5 inches (75th percentile)

Clothing size: Macy is comfortably wearing 3-month clothes now. She just transitioned to size 2 diapers.

Diet: Just breastmilk. We're experimenting with different methods of delivering the milk though, including nursing, a bottle, a spoon and a sippy cup. I'm considering starting cereal when she turns 5 months old.

Sleep: The big accomplishment this month was to get Macy to take naps on her own. I used to hold her for many of her naps since she would wake up as soon as I put her down. Now though, we have her taking several naps a day (30-45 min) in her crib. At night, she sleeps from about 7:30pm-7am and wakes up once or twice to nurse. In the last week I started giving the "dream feed" a try (feeding her right before we go to bed at about 10:30pm while she is still asleep). It has helped to push back her first wakening a couple of hours. That longer stretch of sleep is bliss for me!

Development: This was a big month! Macy started batting at her toys and then grabbing them. Everything she grabs goes right to the mouth! She enjoys sucking on her hands and drooling. She has become very vocal lately. She shrieks and coos loudly and babbles all the time (especially when watching sports). She smiles at herself in the mirror and has even started a small laugh. Macy loves standing up, so we pulled out the exersaucer and doorway jumper and she has had a great time with those. Last week she rolled over for the first time. She still smiles constantly and is especially happy in the morning.

Likes: Baths (she is really splashing around now and sucks on her washcloth), doorway jumper, linked colorful plastic rings, standing up, Mom and Dad's goofy noises and faces

Dislikes: Being left alone, long car rides, having sleeves put on, being lotioned up

I was thrilled to catch Macy's first roll ever on video this morning. Sorry the clip is dark...it was early :)

We found a new form of entertainment! Happy Friday!

My First DIY Project for Macy

Macy got a visit from Bryce's mom (aka Granna) on her 16-week birthday. While Cyndie was here, she was kind enough to teach me how to sew on her sewing machine. The last time I sewed anything was way back in home-ec class (some 12 or 13 years ago I think...).

The projects this time were burp cloths and seatbelt covers for Macy's carseat. Cyndie was very helpful and I had lots of fun. I was fairly pleased with the end result, though they are far from perfect. Now I'm searching for what to do next!

Macy sporting her new seatbelt covers. Goal: eliminate red marks on her neck caused by the edges of the seatbelt

Seatbelt covers with velcro. We used the same material that Cyndie used for Macy's quilt here

Visit from the Grandparents

This week Macy got visits from both my parents and Bryce's mom. What a lucky girl! Unfortunately, both sets of grandparents live 3 hours from us, so Macy doesn't get to visit with them as often as we'd like. We had a great time and Grandma Jan, Grandpa Steve, and Granna all got to see how quickly Macy is changing.

The weather was beautiful when my parents came, so we went for a walk on a nearby nature trail. When Cyndie came to visit, she spent time helping me add another domestic skill to my repertoire--sewing (pictures of our projects will be in the next blog post). I'm excited to practice and start making cute things for Macy!

First Trip to the Zoo

This week I took Macy to the zoo with some DePauw friends and their kids. Although Macy is only 3 1/2 months old, it was clear that she enjoyed the trip! The weather was sunny and quite warm for the beginning of November. Most of the animals were out and active. It has been several years since I have been to the zoo, so I had a great time too!

Macy was a little worn out by the time we got to the bears

I'm looking forward to taking her again in the spring when she can really appreciate what's going on!

Bouncing Baby Ballerina

For Macy's first Halloween I just had to dress her in hot pink frills. I had a lot of fun turning her into a ballerina and showing her off around the neighborhood. We went over to visit the Millis family so Macy and Mackenzie could pose in their adorable outfits. How cute!

Macy especially enjoyed chewing on something new!

Off to the Races!

Last weekend Bryce, Macy, and I traveled to Lexington to visit Bryce's family, celebrate October birthdays, and go to Keeneland to watch horse races. Macy isn't old enough to get excited about the horses, but they did catch her attention as they ran by. We had fun dressing her up too!

Gotta love the giant bow!

In addition to a trip to the racetrack, Macy got to spend some quality time with her cousins. It's fun to see the little ones together and stare as they try to figure each other out.

Cyndie also completed her quilt for Macy, so we had to document that too. It's beautiful!

3 months old!

On Wednesday Macy turned 3 months old! It's been a lot of fun to see her discovering the world around her.

No appointment this month, so I'm guessing:

Length: 24.5-25 inches
Weight: 13 lbs (according to our bathroom scale)

Clothing size: Macy is wearing mostly 0-3 month clothes. Some brands of 3 month clothes are small enough for her, but some are still too long.

Diet: Still breastfeeding. She eats about 3-4 ounces every 2-3 hours. I'm hoping to try rice cereal after her 4-month appointment in November.

Sleep: We've fluctuated between waking up once and twice a night for feedings. A few times Macy has slept 7-hour stretches and last night she had her first 8-hour stretch! I was thrilled. We're attempting earlier bedtimes due to nighttime fussiness. Macy also needs to be convinced to take naps during the day (unless we're in the car). I guess life is too exciting while the sun is shining!

Development: Macy is doing much better with tummy time and holds her head up well. She sucks on her hands often. Still no rolling yet, but she can really rock her lower body when she gets upset. Macy is smiling and cooing often. She experiments with vowel sounds and "guh" sounds.

Likes: Baths, staring out the window, standing with support, stuffed Lamaze inchworm

Dislikes: Outfit changes, evenings (we hope an earlier bedtime fixes this), long car trips, waking up from naps

Look how long I am!

Poops...I did it again.

Well, after nearly 3 months we finally had our first diaper blow-out. Macy was wearing the most appropriate outfit for the event too! So ironic we just had to share...

Visit to the Pumpkin Patch

This weekend we took advantage of the above-average temperatures and traveled to Tuttle Orchards to visit their pumpkin patch. This year we spent our time searching for pumpkins with the Millis family. Tuttle's has lots of other fun activities like corn mazes and hay rides that Macy can enjoy when she's a bit older. They also sell fall treats like caramel apples, fudge, and cider slushies, which were perfect on an 85-degree day!

2 months

On Friday Macy had her 2-month appointment with the pediatrician. She's changed so much in the past month!

Length: 24 inches (she grew 2 inches since her last appointment!)
Head: 15.5 inches
Weight: 11 lbs 10.5 ounces

Clothing size: Macy is still wearing newborn onesies and pants, but is now in 0-3 month sleepers (the girl is long!).

Diet: Just breastmilk...she eats every 2-3 hours during the day.

Sleep: Thankfully, Macy is sleeping 5-6 hour stretches now. She is quite easy to put to bed too. We give her a bottle around 10pm and put her down to sleep anywhere between 10:30 and 11. She generally lies awake in her crib for several minutes quiet and alert. She has started sucking her fist before she falls asleep on her own. Still no regular nap schedule, but she takes several small naps through the day.

Development: Boy, this girl smiles a lot! She is always in a wonderful mood in the morning and smiles and coos easily. Sometimes it sounds like she is close to laughing. Macy is tracking very well and watches us leave the room. Her head control really impressed the pediatrician. When she has tummy time, she rocks her lower body but hasn't rolled yet. Macy loves standing with support under her arms.

Likes: Activity mat with jittery monkey, her changing station, walks with Mom and Dad, bathtime

Dislikes: Getting out of the bath, outfit changes, waking up from naps, tummy time (hence the lower body rocking...she may just roll over soon!)

Fun on the activity mat!
